Becky Rule, Moose of Humor A recent recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from New England College, Becky has been collecting and telling stories of New Hampshire and New England for fifteen years. Becky's newest release from Islandport Press, Headin' for the Rhubarb! A New Hampshire Dictionary (well, kinda) will set you straight on the correct meaning of New Hampshire's native expressions and how to pronounce them, to boot. Becky's hilarious book, Live Free and Eat Pie: A Storyteller's Guide to New Hampshire, published by Islandport Press, will give you an inside look at the Granite State as only a native sees it! Her new collection of stories, Could Have Been Worse: True Stories, Embellishments and Outright Lies, has been published by Plaidswede Press -- the same publisher that brought us Fritz Wetherbee's New Hampshire, a regional best seller. A New Hampshire native, she has published two other collections of short stories. The Best Revenge (University Press of new England) was named Outstanding Work of Fiction by the NH Writers Project and listed as one of five "Essential NH Books" by New Hampshire Magazine. She also co-authored two how-to books with Susan Wheeler: Creating the Story and True Stories (Heinemann). For seventeen years she wrote a column on NH books and writers, Bookmarks, that appeared in the Concord Monitor, Nashua Telegraph, and Portsmouth Herald. Best known for her live presentations of humorous New Hampshire stories, many sponsored by the NH Humanities Council, she has entertained audiences throughout New Hampshire, prompting New Hampshire Magazine to name her "Thalia: the Muse of Comedy" in its list of notable New Hampshire muses. Her CDs are "Perley Gets a Dumpsticker," and "Better than a Poke in the Eye." A roster artist for the NH State Council on the Arts, her passion for spoken word takes her to schools sometimes, helping young writers find their voices. And for more than ten years she's served on the steering committee for the New Hampshire Young Writers Conference. For Friends of the UNH Libraries she hosts the interview show"The Authors Series" which airs on New Hampshire Public Television.
"A fresh egg with its sunflower-colored yolk in a frying pan. Home-tapped maple syrup out of a jug. A warm tomato just picked from the vine (sans hornworm). The barking of geese flying south and the boom of cracking ice on a winter pond. Spring peepers. A town truck spinning its wheels in March mud. The cadences of an auctioneer, the moderator at Town Meeting, a storekeeper, dumpkeeper, sheriff, keeper of the records at the library and the historical society. These are the associations my senses make when I read Rebecca Rule's work. She is authentic. There's not a wrong note in her telling of the wonderful, often hilarious, and deeply affecting stories that comprise the collection: Could Have Been Worse. But, though she is appropriately billed as a Yankee humorist, her consummate skill as a fiction writer must not be overlooked. One has only to read the stunning story, 'Dreams End,' to appreciate that here is an American original." --Marie Harris, NH Poet Laureate "We felt like we were with our closest friends, in somebody's kitchen, swapping stories." --J. G., Durham "Your presentation was wonderful and such an enjoyable way to pass an evening." --K.C., Londonderry "The more I thought about last night the more fun I had! A good laugh sure goes a long way. . . . We enjoyed ourselves immensely. It was GOOD to laugh out loud -- so thank you for that gift."--S.M., Hampton "Thank you for a wonderful program! Everyone had a great time. I think there will be a few looking for your next program so they can see if you used their stories."--C.S., Londonderry "You get a blue ribbon . . . for your really fun presentation."--M.J., Hil "I have recently read your book 'Live Free and Eat Pie' and laughed out loud while reading it to the point where my wife asked me to please read it in another room." --JPM, Deering
